Alva M. Porter, 77 of Palatka, Florida passed away at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at Putnam Community Medical Center.  She was born on June 30, 1936  to the late James and Addie Morris. She enjoyed time with her family and good food.   Besides her parents she is preceded in death by  her daughter, Brenda Gayle Vulgamore, sisters, Gertrude Rich, Juanita Markel and Cheri Albritton. She is survived by her sons, Donald Scott, Steven Scott, and Kenneth Porter; brothers, James (Hilda) Morris, Ronnie (Sherry) Morris, Anthony Morris; sisters, Macey Thomas, Shirley Day; forty three grand and great grandchildren. Graveside Service will be Thursday, May 22, 2014, 4 PM at Peniel Cemetery. Thomas W. (Tom) Bryson, 87 of Welaka, Florida passed away on Monday, May 5, 2014 in Gainesville, Fl.  Tom was born on January 18, 1927 in Ansonia, Ohio to the late William R., and Ethel Susan (Downey ) Bryson.  He retired from the Sarasota County Sheriff's Auxillary
as a Chief Officer.  Tom was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed fixing things. Besides his parents he is preceded in death by numerous siblings and two wives, Marge and Pauline and a daughter, Barbie.  He leaves behind to carry on his legacy, daughters, Sharon Wilcox of Crestview, Fl., Sue Panzarella of Humble, Tx., Dori Prahm of Pensacola, Fl., Jamie Turner of Milton, Fl.; sons, Steve Bryson of Pensacola, Fl., Tim Bryson of Middleburg, Oh., Greg Bryson of Welaka, Fl.; sisters, Margarite Bird of Austin, Tx., Phyllis Auckerman of Ohio; numerous grandchildren and many great and great great grandchildren. Leon Q. Register, 79 of Lake Como, Florida passed peacefully on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on November 2, 1934 in Alamo, Georgia to the late Wesley and Audrey Register.  He was a Veteran of the U.S.Air Force.  Leon was a member of the Moose Lodge, #1641 in Crescent City, Fl., where he served as past governor and achieved the blue coat.  He was an avid bingo player at the Moose Lodge and various churches.  Besides his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Diane Frances Register, granddaughter, Amanda Whitmore and grandsons, Josh, Jonathan and Jason Register.   Survivors are children, Michael E. Register of Lake Como, Fl., Patty L. Jackson (Andy) of Welaka, Fl., Durwin Register (Leigh) of Deltona, Fl., Deborah Searncy of Dallas, Tx., Cindy Madrigal of Kansas City, Mo.; brothers and sisters, Jimmy, Wayne and Marvin Register; sisters, Brenda, Gail, Dale. and Barbara; fifteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Graveside Service will be Tuesday, June 3, 2014, 11 AM at Deland Memorial Gardens with Jamie Watts as officiant.  Visitation will be Monday, June 2, 2014 from 6-8 PM at Watts Funeral Home in San Mateo, Fl. Helen Ruth Hefner

Helen Ruth Hefner, 101, went home to be with the Lord on May 30, 2014 at the Haven Hospice Center for Caring in Palatka.  She was born on May 12, 1913 in Augulaize County, OH.  She married Wryght Hefner on August 28, 1934.  Wryght and Helen moved their family to Florida in 1957.  Helen was a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend.  She worked with Wryght on their farm while in Ohio.  Upon moving to Florida she was a full time housewife and mother until the children were grown, then she worked for five years at a daycare center in the baby room where she gave many babies a good start with her loving attention.  Helen’s sweet spirit attracted people to her and it wasn’t unusual for her to get smiles, extra attention and even hugs from strangers while out shopping.  
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Wryght, and sons Lester and Klor.  She is now having a joyful reunion in heaven with them, her parents, and her brothers and sisters who have been waiting for her there.
Left to cherish her memories is son Jerry Hefner (Tina), daughters, Ruth Ann (Sandy) Barr (Tom) and Joy Caldwell (Ben) and 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, June 3, 2014. 11:00 AM  at Watts Funeral Home in San Mateo, FL with Reverend John Miles officiating.  Interment will be at a later date in the Osceola Memory Gardens, Kissimmee, Florida.

Mary M. Kestler, 56 of Pomona Park, Florida went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, May 28, 2014.  Mary was born in Norfolk, Va., on May 5, 1958 to the late Richard and Evelyn Kestler.  Mary deeply loved God and studied His word everyday. Charles (Wayne) Trim, 66 of Palatka, Florida went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at Crestwood Nursing Home.  He was born in Geneva, Alabama on August 12, 1947 to the late Charles R. and Bernice Trim. Besides his parents he is preceded in death by his son, Tony Litchfield, sister, Nancy Louise Trim and grandson, Ashton Trim.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing,  and spending time with his nephews and nieces. Survivors are his son, Matthew J. (Stephanie)  Trim of Satsuma, Fl.; daughter, Alisha D (Chuck)Weaver of Satsuma, Fl.; sisters and brothers, Carolyn F. Byrd of San Mateo, Fl., Cornelia A.  (Donahue) Carver of Lake City, Fl., Donna Gail (William)  Cox of  Palatka, Fl., Chuck A  (Glenda). Mary  Taylor Cole, 93 of Pomona Park, Florida passed away on Monday, June 23, 2014 in Palatka, Fl. Mary was born on December 18, 1920  in Rhine, Ga., to the late William and Susan Pickren.  She was a member of Pomona Park Baptist Church.  She loved her church, fishing, gardening and spending time with her family. Besides her parents she is preceded in  death by her first husband, M.J. Taylor of 42 years. She is survived by her husband of 18  years, Ralph E. Cole of Pomona Park, Fl.; two daughters, Dinah Ulmer and husband, Charles, Mary Joe Ballard; two granddaughters, Suzy Sharpe and husband, Gary, Cindy Gardell  and husband, Greg; and four great grandsons, Cameron and Luke Gardell, Garrett and Matthew Sharpe. 

Funeral Service will be Thursday, 11:00 AM, June 26, 2014 with Rev. Mary Frances Hilton, 85,  lifelong resident of Welaka, Fl.,  passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2014 at Roberts Care Center surrounded by her family.  Mrs. Hilton was born September 27, 1928 in Climax, Georgia to the late Hayes and Ruby (Daughtry) Dollar. Besides her parents she is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Rosie Hilton, brothers, Tommy and Donald Lawson, Eddie and DW Dollar.  She enjoyed cooking, sewing, dancing, music.  She was a classy lady and invented the word," diva" before it was known.   Survivors are her daughters, Mira (Myra)  and John Holman of Vilano Beach, Fl., Deckie and Glenn  Brown of San Mateo, Fl.; son, Jonas  and Lisa Hilton of Palatka, Fl., Kim (TK)  and Jan Hilton of Mandarin, Fl.; sisters, Ongel  and Bill Fitzwater of Welaka, Fl.,  Glenda Jean Wells of San Mateo, Fl.; sister-in-law, Faye Lawson of Palatka, Fl.; ten grandchildren, Michel  Scott, Jai Sikes, Roy Terrell, Sandi Parker, Ashley Hilton,  Derek Hilton, Chad Hilton, Lindsey Spiese, Jessie Hilton,   Julie Hilton and twelve great grandchildren.  Funeral Service will be Wednesday, June 4, 2014, 2 PM at Welaka Baptist Church with Rev. Timothy Mark Hall officiating.  Visitation will be Wednesday, June 4, 2014, 1:00 PM at Welaka Baptist Church.  Mrs. Hilton will be laid to rest at Oakwood Cemetery in Welaka, Florida. Bobby E. Charles Judson Chiles Jr.

Charles Judson Chiles Jr. passed away on July 2, 2014 at the Bailey Center Hospice, St. Augustine. He had sustained injuries from a fall in his home after recovering from heart surgery. Charlie, or CJ to his family, was born in Albemarle County, Virginia on February 24, 1923. As a young man he went to California to work at Lockheed Aircraft, and after Pearl Harbor he served in the US Navy during WWII. After the war he worked in the fruit importing business and later worked as a welder and pipefitter in locations all around the world from Oregon to Maine with Utah, Texas and Michigan in between, to the oilfields of Saudi Arabia. He was a 60-plus year member of the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters. He found his way to Florida as a welder for work in the space program, and retired to enjoy the area’s beaches and rivers. Charlie was predeceased by his longtime companion Doris Hornsby, and he is survived by several close cousins living in Virginia, and his devoted nieces and nephews, to whom he was a loving and generous uncle and role model. He was a friend to many in the Welaka area where he lived, including neighbors he had helped over the years and who helped him greatly in his last few months. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 12 at 11:00 AM, at Watts Funeral Home, San Mateo.

Etha Dawn Thornton (Dawnie), 78, of Pomona Park, passed away at her home on Saturday, July 12, 2014.She was born July 29, 1935 in Manhattan, Keats County, Kansas and lived in Welaka Florida for the last 43 years. She is survived by her loving husband Mack T. Thornton and two sons, William P. Thornton and Kelly M. Thornton, eight grandchildren and one great-grandson. Preceded  in death by daughter Kim L. Thornton; son Mark J. Thornton and daughter Teresa Thornton Brown. She was a professional hair dresser for over 40  years as well as a published professional Master Wire Artist, known world-wide in her craft. A teacher of fine wire wrapping of gold and silver jewelry at the William Holland School of Lapidary Arts for 20 years and loved by all her students. She was a member of the local Moose Lodge for more than 35 years and held many offices there. Dawnie was a loving, giving and joyful person, full of happiness and enthusiasm in every area of life. She never met a person she didn't like and everyone who met her returned her affection equally. She was an avid lover of animals, especially horses, dogs and cats. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends and all who knew her. William W. (Bill) Jones, 85 Pomona Park, Florida passed away on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 in Orange City, Fl.  Bill was born on June 7, 1929 to the late Charles A. and Eva (Birdsall) Jones in Danbury, Ct.  He is a Veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the  Korean War as a photographer. He was avid jogger.He enjoyed fishing and tied many of his own lures. He also loved collecting coins, small game hunting and growing organic vegetables. He loved sports and his  favorites teams  were FSU, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Steelers.   Besides his parents,  he preceded in death by his brother, Brad Jones, wife, Joyce McRae Jones and his beloved dog, Blackie. Survivors are his sons, Jeff Jones of Pomona Park, Fl., Greg McRae Jones of Deltona, Fl., Scott Jones  (Krischelle) of Noblesville, In.; daughter, Stephanie L. Jones of Orange City, Fl.;  two grandchildren, Karis and Isabella Jones; and his dog, Buck.  A private gathering will be held at a later date.
